About Us

This club was created to address the lack of social, emotional, and academic support students often face when learning English. We hope to benefit the mental welfare and academic growth of students by matching current English learners to student mentors who wish to inspire their peers using their English learning experience. This way, students do not have to be alone in their journey to master English.

The Mentorship for English Learners club aims to:

  • Serve as a student-level support network for international students and English Language Learners (ELL) at the University of Calgary
  • Provide leadership opportunities for students who wish to help fellow students in overcoming challenges associated with learning a new language, and adapting to a new environment

MEL’s objectives are to:

  • Provide personalized one-on-one peer support by pairing up mentors and mentees, such that the mentees can learn from the mentors’ experience, and share their joy and progress in English learning
  • Promote on and off campus resources available for English Language Learners
  • Encourage students to share their language learning experiences
  • Provide presentation practices, conversation practices, language workshops for     English learners on campus
  • Build a supportive and inclusive environment for International students and English learners through networking and social events
  • Provide translation services for students needing assistance
